In 1968 the American company Mattel introduced the "Hot Wheels", a range of toy cars in about 1/64th scale. These models had a special feature: their thin axles granted excellent free-rolling abilities. Furthermore, many issues were fantasy designs with sometimes rather bizarre body stiles, which set them apart from their competitors, e.g. the more realistic Matchbox models. From the beginning the range was a great success, and according to Mattel more than three billion models have been produced so far. The first models were still made in the USA, but soon production was shifted to Hong Kong and in 1982 to Malaysia. Since the 1990s most models are manufactured in Malaysia, China and Thailand, but Hot Wheels have also been made in India (manufactured by Leo), Vietnam and Mexico, since 2017 also in Indonesia. The models have also become very popular among collectors, mainly in the USA. Besides the traditional toy cars, collectible models in 1/64th, 1/43rd and 1/18th scale are also marketed under the Hot Wheels name today, namely the Elite series featuring detailed Ferrari models and movie cars.
